  • Very nice boat for fishing

Posted by Jim Bennett on Jul 15th 2021

Having never had a fishing kayak, I could not be more pleased with my purchase of the Kilroy HD. To be perfectly honest, I really had no idea as to what to expect when I decided on this boat. I am a large person (around 280 lb) and over 6' tall. This boat allows me to sit comfortably all day fishing, and getting in and out are much easier than I expected. It is not as fast as the smaller narrower boats that my buddies use, but I am able to mostly keep up, and what I give up in speed, I make up in comfort and rod management. I have added a crate with rod holders and the "Hawg" fishing tray to the boat. This allows me to keep my tackle bag in front along with my fish finder, and I can stage 3 rods behind the seat. I'm still able to keep a rod in the trolling rod holder as needed. The only problem I encountered with the boat was getting up out of the seat while on the water. I solved this problem by adding 9" Hobie handles to the side track forward of the seat. Problem solved.

And if all this was not enough to recommend the boat, I have had reason to contact customer support at Jackson for an accessory I needed, and they are simply the best!

In summary, a great fishing platform with all the features you could want on a fishing kayak. Yes, it is a bit heavy, but even with that it is manageable. So far, I only have a dozen or so hours on the water with it, but based on my experience so far, I expect to gets more.

  • Most versatile boat on the market

I purchased this boat to go kayak camping along the rivers in Missouri. My first trip was a 4-day trout fishing excursion along the Eleven Point river in the ozarks of Missouri. The boat performed flawlessly AFTER I moved the seat all the way back and put my cooler and Yeti box in the front. I had dry bags strapped to the bow and stern with 1" NRS straps.

Of note, the boat was not very stable with the seat in the upper position. For a lake, this may be ok. For a river, I recommend having the seat in the lower position.

I plan to have this boat for many years to come. Soon I will buy another seat so my 3-year-old can ride with me. Great boat. Thanks, Jackson!

I got the Kilroy HD after having an OG Kilroy for many years. (Still can’t believe i sold that!) but I must say, I am loving all of the changes and similarities that came with the HD !!! I love brining my 80 pound Golden Retriever out on paddles with me and this boats allows her to be comfortable and curious without me getting wet! It’s a great kayak for the angler and the paddle buddy of a furry friend! Demo one today, you will fall in-love !!

This is my first sit inside kayak. I use to fish from a sit on top but I'm enjoying the Kilroy HD very much. I can paddle this kayak with no problems into the wind. Being an older guy I do struggle getting myself to stand up in the kayak but I manage to get it done.
I have fished with conventional fishing gear and fly fished from this great platform. However when fly fishing I do notice that the orange seat locks will somehow capture my fly line when I'm sitting and casting. But when I'm standing I don't have any problems.
The internal rod storage system is a great idea but it is very difficult to get the rods out while on the water or even to put them back into the internal storage system.

The Kilroy HD is a great boat.
